Inishowen 100 (Wild Atlantic Way)

Our starting point for this trip has us in Buncrana, Co. Donegal. the drive itself from home was nice, winding through the sperrin mountains towards Derry and on to Buncrana along the coast road. After staying the night at the lovely Harbour Inn (well worth the visit) we set of to drive the coast road the whole way around the peninsula back into Derry.

We start from Buncrana and head northwards and soon stumble upon the “Inishowen 100” sign posts, first stop Dunree Head.

A stunning bay with an old fort on its peninsula, sadly for us it was closed so only stayed for a few quick pics and on our way, northwards again. the next stop or should I say sight is “Mamore Gap” sign posted off the road, straight left and straight up the mountain side. Best advise make sure there’s nothing coming from the other direction and take a good run at it!!! its a steep climb to say the least. The view through the gap down the other side is well worth it though.

Dropping down the other side of the gap you look out at the sea, the road down is like something out of “Goldfinger” with a few tight twisting hairpins not for the faint hearted. Again we follow the sign getting ever closer to the coast. The next sign we see was for Doagh Strand, with a dab of the breaks and a yank on the steering wheel off we go….

Wow… this beach has to be up there with one of the nicest beach I’ve ever seen in my life!! stunning golden sand stretched out on both side of the coastline. An amazing place, the café at it is great too as we stop for lunch trying to take in the views.

We took a walk around the stunning beach for a while then hopped back into the car onward to our next adventure…. (the best was yet to come!!!)
