Murlough Bay

Located on the Torr Head loop along the north coast, we were driving along, admiring the views and trying to get the car up and down the hills. We stumbled across a sign pointing to what appeared to be the cliffs edge, off we went.

P1100935Driving down the narrow single lane road towards the drop off and the water’s edge we came to the brow of the hill and Murlough Bay was presented to us far below. Downward we went still following the road around the twists and dips. The road drops away quite sharply as you descend toward the sea.

After about 5-10 mins of driving we have reached the bottom and the road has now become a gravel track with grass in the middle, which only adds to the excitement of what awaits us round the next few bends. Down further we go until we reach a small lay by and decide this is as good a spot as any to park the car. We go the rest of the way on foot.

We walk along the road, which now runs along the water’s edge with only a small rock covered beach between us and the water. The bay really is so remote with the cliffs and the hills rising up from it almost vertically. It really isn’t hard to see why it was chosen for Game of Thrones. A little along the road are some old house ruins which look spectacular in this setting.

Could almost be medieval

At the end of the road there are two small cottages, some spot for a holiday home. A small fishing boat tells me this place is still used, again not a bad place to be setting sail from . the views from the bay are spectacular, and we have it all to ourselves, as we are the only ones exploring it today.

Definitely worth a visit and a good spot to venture down, maybe bring a picnic and sit and enjoy the views for a few hours.
