Driving along the coast road, admiring the stunning views, we happened upon a small brown sign at the side of the road and thought what the hell – Kinbane Castle, might as well pull off the main road and check it out.
Off the main road about 1.5 miles down a narrow country lane you arrive at a car park perched high on the cliff side, looking out at the fast ocean below.
A path from the corner of the carpark leads you down along the cliff edge. A stunning view awaits of the cliff side, with the waves crashing into the coastline below. A little further on down the narrow path way the road bends out of sight masking from main view the attraction of the castle that awaits below as you round the corner.
As you peer around the corner you are greeted with your first glimpse of castle, appearing to be stuck out in the middle of the ocean, clinging to the rocks as the waves crash in on all sides.

Far below you can see what remains of the castle and just begin to wonder what it must have been like back in its full glory. Further down we go along the path descending deeper down the cliff side until we are at ground level and looking out at the castle remains.

As you explore the site there are a few hidden gems to be discovered such as the small fisherman’s cottage and old peer that remains from the not too distant past. A wander around the ruins is possible via access up the modern steps which allow you right out to the very tip of the peninsula, well worth it for the views along the whole coast. We went on a windy day which helped with the waves crashing in but made walking out around the edges a little challenging to say the least. To think this little spot is hidden out of sight, with an amazing location (has to appear on some film locations sometime) it’s definitely worth the visit. Just a 5-10 min walk from the carpark down the well laid out cliff path. Give it a visit!!!!!
